How to Choose a Wedding Venue That Truly Fits Your Wedding?

Choosing a wedding venue is often one of the first big decisions you make while planning your wedding. And it is very tempting to fall in love with beautiful photos, an impressive garden or that one perfect terrace.

But a venue should not only look beautiful. It should also suit the way you want to experience your wedding day.

Those details often make the biggest difference.

Start with your plans

Before visiting dozens of venues, it helps to first think about the wedding itself.

Do you want to get married outside? Have a long dinner at beautifully styled tables? A big party? Or perhaps an intimate wedding weekend where everyone stays overnight?

Your guest count also plays an important role. A beautiful room can feel enormous with 50 guests, while the same space may feel too crowded with 150.

So do not just choose a venue you instantly fall in love with. Choose one that truly suits the kind of day you want to create.

Look carefully at the flow of the day

A wedding consists of different moments: the arrival, ceremony, drinks, dinner and often a party.

Ideally, those moments flow naturally into one another.

During a venue visit, we always pay attention to the routing. Do guests need to keep moving through the same space? Does a room have to be completely transformed between different parts of the day? Can suppliers work behind the scenes without guests noticing?

When the flow works well, it creates a sense of calm. For you, for the suppliers and for your guests.

And that is something you really notice on the day itself.

Make sure Plan B feels just as good as Plan A

Dreaming of an outdoor ceremony or dinner in the garden? Wonderful. But especially in the Netherlands, a good rain plan is essential.

Always ask what happens if the weather changes.

Is there enough indoor space for all your guests? Do you genuinely like that space as well? Can the same atmosphere still be created inside?

A Plan B should never feel like a disappointing alternative. Ideally, it simply feels like another beautiful option.

Pay attention to light and sound

Two things that are easy to forget during a first venue visit are light and sound.

Think about where the sun will be at the time of your ceremony or dinner. A terrace may look beautiful, but it can be less comfortable if all your guests are sitting in direct afternoon sunlight.

Also ask about sound restrictions.

Until what time can music be played? Is a live band allowed? Do windows and doors need to be closed after a certain hour?

Especially if a great party is important to you, these are things you want to know before booking the venue.

Think about food and drinks

Not every wedding venue works in the same way when it comes to catering.

Some venues have their own kitchen and fixed menus, while others work with external caterers and offer much more flexibility.

Think about what matters most to you. Would you like fine dining, shared dining, a relaxed outdoor dinner or perhaps a full wedding weekend with a welcome dinner and brunch?

The catering should not only taste good, but also fit the atmosphere you want to create.

Can guests stay overnight?

Especially when guests are travelling from further away, accommodation can be a big advantage.

This does not always have to be at the venue itself. A lovely hotel nearby, combined with organised transport, can work just as well.

For a wedding weekend, this becomes even more important. You are not only thinking about the wedding day itself, but about the full guest experience from arrival to breakfast the next morning.

How much freedom do you have with styling?

The venue determines to a large extent what is possible, and what is needed, when it comes to styling.

Some venues already have so much character that only a few refined additions are needed. Other spaces are more of a blank canvas, giving you the freedom to build a complete design concept from scratch.

Ask about things such as candles, floral installations, hanging possibilities, furniture and setup times.

For us, good styling should never feel separate from the venue. The most beautiful result is created when the two enhance each other.

Do not forget the practical side

It may be less exciting, but it is just as important: logistics.

Can suppliers load and unload easily? How much setup time is available? Is there enough power? Where can a band store equipment? And what exactly is included in the venue hire?

These are not the things you will see in your wedding photos.

But they can have a big impact on how smoothly the day runs.

During a venue visit, try to see it through your guests’ eyes too

One tip we often give couples is to walk through the venue as if you were a guest.

Where do you arrive? Where do you leave your coat? Is it immediately clear where the ceremony takes place? How far away are the restrooms? Where do you go for drinks afterwards? Does everything feel logical?

A well-organised wedding often feels effortless to guests.

That is exactly what you want.

The most beautiful venue is not always the best venue

Of course, your wedding venue should make you feel something. It is the place where one of the most memorable days of your life will take place.

But alongside that first emotional connection, it is important to look at what the venue actually makes possible.

Does it suit your guest count? Is there a strong Plan B? Does the routing work? Are there enough possibilities for catering, styling and the party? And does the collaboration with the venue feel professional and pleasant?

When atmosphere, possibilities and organisation come together, you have a very strong foundation for the rest of your wedding.
